Forensic officer Derek Scimger arrived at the crime scene at around 08:00hrs on the 1st July 2003.

Forensic tents had been erected before Sandra Lean had allegedly taken her two daughters to school, as she claimed back in May 2010 (See below).

Why Didn’t Scammer Sandra Lean Include The Fact The Pathologist Anthony Busuttil Had Attended The Scene Of Killer Luke Mitchell’s Murderous Crime?

Who was with professor Anthony Busuttil when he attended the scene of killer Luke Mitchell’s murderous crime?

Mark Heron

Excerpts from a Daily Mail article (dated 14th December 2004) here read;

The body of schoolgirl Jodi Jones was found with her hands behind her back and both wrists bound by the legs of a pair of trousers, a murder trial heard today.

Mark Heron, an identification officer with Lothian and Borders Police, told the High Court in Edinburgh that one wrist appeared to have been tied, while the other wrist had a trouser leg twisted around it.

Mr Heron, 40, also confirmed to the court that a pair of underpants and a bra were among the items scattered in the area of Dalkeith, Midlothian, where her body was found last summer.

Mr Heron, who has been with the identification branch for 22 years, told the court he visited the scene where the 14-year-old girl’s body lay at about 4am on July 1 last year.

He told the court the body was naked apart from a pair of socks.

A sketched plan of the scene, drawn up by the witness, was also shown to the courtroom.

It detailed the location of various items which were found scattered in the vicinity of the body, near the Roan’s Dyke path.

Among the items were a pair of underpants, a bra, a pair of spectacles and a spectacle lens, a £1 coin and a pair of trainers, the jury of eight women and seven men heard.

Mr Heron also identified a jacket with a “Deftones” label among the items.

The court was shown a photograph of a nearby blood-stained wall, from which, the witness said, two blood samples were taken.

Derek Scrimger

Excerpts from a Daily Record article here read;

Forensic scientist Derek Scrimger,40,said he was called at home and arrived at the path at 8am the following day.

He said a colleague had been there earlier but because she had a bad back, she couldn’t climb over the wall to the spot where Jodi lay.

When he got there, her body had been moved from the original position and her clothing gathered together.

Mr Scrimger said there were two areas of bloodstaining on the wall near where her body was found

One could have been caused by Jodi or her bloodstained attacker falling or brushing against the wall.

The second area was lower and was consistent with blood spraying from a severed artery.

Advocate depute Alan Turnbull, QC, said:

“Does that suggest that if the young girl’s throat was cut in the area near to the wall, she must have been near to the ground when that happened?”

Mr Scrimger:

“Given the angles the way the blood hit the wall, either kneeling or sitting”

Mr Turnbull: “If the assailant was behind her when the young girl was low down at the wall and her throat was cut several times, is it conceivable she has collapsed on to the wall and down to the ground as the artery has been severed?”

Mr Scrimger:

“It is one possibility”

The jury have already seen a video showing that Jodi also suffered massive injuries to her face, stomach and left breast.

Mr Scrimger said if her throat had been cut from behind, the blood would have travelled forward and there wouldn’t necessarily have been any on the attacker.

But he agreed that if Jodi’s clothing had been removed after death, it was likely the attacker would be bloodstained.

Questioned by defence QC Donald Findlay, he said the body and clothing should not have been moved before he got there.

Earlier, identification officer Mark Heron,40,said he arrived at the scene only hours after Jodi’s body was found.

Scattered around her were her clothes. Her spectacles were also on the ground and one of the lenses had come out.

Alan Murray

Excerpts from a 2004 Daily Record article read;

Police photographer Alan Murray, 45, said that in the early hours of July 1 last year, he was called to the wooded area.

Alan Murray

At that point, advocate depute Alan Turnbull told the judge:

“Obviously in the nature of this case, some of these photographs are distressing. I say that by way of explanation and caution”

Copies of the photos were handed to the jury and Lord Nimmo Smith said:

“You will understand that it is in the nature of this case that some of the evidence relate to matters – you may find distressing when you look at certain photographs.

‘”I am sorry but that is just what is involved in a murder trial.

“If you want to take a break at any time please let me know.’ The photos were also shown via a projector on the screen.

Mr Murray said he walked down Roan’s Dyke Path and at one point climbed over a ‘V’ in the wall which runs parallel to the track.

A photo of Jodi’s body was then shown and the officer agreed with Mr Turnbull that she had sustained ‘massive’ injuries to the neck, breast and stomach.

She was pictured lying partially on her side and in the foreground lay a pair of trainers.

The prosecutor continued:

“Was it clear she had suffered an injury to the right side of her face?”

Mr Murray: ‘Yes sir.’

Advocate depute:

“Was that an apparently cutting injury that cut open her cheek from just below the corner of her mouth back to the ear?”

Mr Murray: ‘Yes sir.’

The officer explained that Jodi’s body was turned over and a close up shot was flashed on the screen.

The video, which was made before the photos were taken, was then played.

Defence counsel Donald Findlay, QC, didn’t cross-examine the officer.
