John O’Keefe Sr (nicknamed Johnny, JJ, Godfather & funcle to his niece & nephew) the oldest son of John Jr & Margaret/Peggy O’Keefe, was a Boston police officer who had been living in Canton, Massachusetts since 2014, having grown up in Braintree. John was the legal guardian to his young niece & nephew Kayley & Patrick, after his older sister Kristen passed away on 11th November 2013, 5 & a half months after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour. John O’Keefe had been in a “dating relationship” with Karen Read since around March 2020, having apparently briefly dated in 2004 (Listen to Erin O’Keefe here) In July 2023 Karen Read alleged, via a Dateline TV show interview with Matt Gutman, that John O’Keefe was the first to “reach out” to her on Facebook. Karen Read lived at 481 Gilbert street in Mansfield, but she would spend several days a week over at John O’Keefe’s house (Note: She rented her house out after she was arrested for her murder) According to Erin O’Keefe, who first met Karen in June 2020, “she liked to go home on Mondays just to kinda have a fresh time by herself” & she would also go to her house in Mansfield on Thursdays “as she was teaching an online class” (Listen to Erin here)

During a trip to Aruba, said to be with approximately 60 friends & family members, John O’Keefe bumped into his friend Marietta Sullivan in the lobby of the hotel he was staying in with Karen Read & his niece & nephew. Marirtta is the younger sister of Laura Sullivan. Laura had dated one of John’s best friends & former BPD partner Pat Rogers. Pat died by suicide on 19th November 2013. Marietta gave John a hug & asked him where he was going. 8:27pm – Brian Higgins, a special ATF agent & former firefighter, received a text message from an unknown number reading “Hey Brian, it’s the weedwhacker” Brian replied with “?” This turned out to be Karen Read (Listen to Brian Higgins here)
**SATURDAY 15th JANUARY 2022**
Brian Higgins helped save the life of a colleague in 2010 & subsequently received a badge for bravery in 2013. Brian first met John O’Keefe & Karen Read around a year before “or a little over a year”. On the 15th of January 2022 Brian went to John’s house to watch the Patriots playoff game against the Buffalo Bills. Brian “recalled arriving at some point in the second half of the game & being one of the last guests to leave” Brian said that when he was walking to the front door of John’s home to exit, Karen suggested that she walk him out through the downstairs garage. While walking through the garage, Brian said that Karen made an advance on him & surprised him with a kiss on the lips “During the course of the interview Mr Higgins provided Massachusetts state police with printouts of his text communications with both the victim & defendant. Mr Higgins indicated that he had first received a text from a then unknown to his number, that he subsequently confirmed was that of the defendant, on January 12. The text messages were romantic in nature, with the defendant & Mr Higgins expressing a mutual liking of each other. In the text communications offered to the Grand Jury, the defendant confirms their kiss, & urges Mr Higgins not to worry, as she knows where the cameras are on the victims house. The defendant then invites Mr Higgins over to her home in Mansfield, an invitation Mr Higgins stated he declined. However, the defendant did stop by Mr Higgins’ home on her way home from a night out with friends in Boston, to discuss their relationship prior to January 28, 2022 (Source 3rd February 2022 interview with troopers Proctor & Bukhenik) Brian Higgins provided 56 pages of text messages between himself & Karen Read. John O’Keefe had been telling Karen Read that their relationship had become “toxic” There were occasions in the weeks leading up to the 28th of January when John had asked Karen to leave his house but she had refused to do so (Source p.4 here) John’s niece described an argument which took place in the week leading up to Karen Read’s murder. She said that John had told Karen “he wanted to end the relationship, that it had run its course, that it was not healthy, and that they argued too often” John’s nephew also described arguments between John & Karen in the couple of weeks leading up to Karen’s murder of John (p.36 here) During the trial John’s nephew testified that Karen Read would get mad at them for little things & stay mad for days “One time we got take-out food, & I was taking a little time to eat it, & the defendant thought I didn’t appreciate it, so she got mad at me” He also said that when Karen got mad she would give him the silent treatment, or leave a room whenever he walked in

12:45am (Approx) – CARS (collision, analysis & reconstruction section) state trooper Joseph Paul estimated Karen Read “side swiped” John O’Keefe at around 12:45am when she put her SUV into drive & pulled forward a short distance, then suddenly went in reverse & hit the gas, accelerating at 75% depression at the speed of 24 mph (Listen to trooper Paul here) During his tests, trooper Paul placed Karen’s SUV into reverse & “started to travel near the training figure. The rear view camera within the vehicle was operating properly, displayed on a screen in the centre of the dashboard, & provided a 360-degree overhead visual. As the Lexus travelled closer to the figure, both the auditory & visual cues within the vehicle sounded off, indicating an obstruction to the rear” (p.29 here)

Karen Read’s lawyer David Yannetti stated in September 2022 “Ms Read has always maintained that she drove her boyfriend, Mr O’Keefe, to drop him off at the Albert residence on the night in question. According to Ms Read, once there, Mr O’Keefe exited the vehicle to confirm they were at the right house. Ms Read waited for him for quite some time, but he never returned. Kayley passed the phone to Karen who continued to scream “Jen, Jen” multiple times & then Karen said to Jennifer that “John didn’t come home. 5:40am (Approx) – Kerry Roberts pulled up behind Karen Read’s SUV on Jennifer McCabe’s driveway. Kerry was still talking to Karen on speaker phone. Kerry noticed that “there was a piece missing” from the rear taillight of Karen’s SUV (Listen to Kerry here)

5:47am (Approx) – At some point after they arrived at John O’Keefe’s house, Karen Read showed Kerry Roberts & Jennifer McCabe her damaged taillight. Karen Read went on to delete this event from Ring camera data (Listen to Sgt Bukhenik here) Kerry Roberts said she noticed “one piece, like a rectangular encapsule”, she remembered there was “a piece sort of sticking out” & she thought “someone’s going to catch their sleeve on that” (Listen to Kerry here) Jennifer observed that when they entered John’s house, Karen failed to remove her footwear in the mud room. Jennifer described John as liking everything in its place & being “very meticulous” & that he “didn’t like dirt”. Jennifer said she searched several rooms of the house looking for John & noticed that his bed was made. Jennifer also said she spoke to John’s niece for “a few minutes”. Jennifer said she didn’t know where Karen was or what Karen was doing throughout the time they were at John’s house. Kerry drove her car from John’s home “because Karen kept screaming we need to go to Fairview” Jennifer said it was an approximate 10 minute drive due to weather conditions “give or take”. It was dark out & difficult to see. Jennifer sat in the front passenger seat, whilst Karen was in the back, “pushed up” between Kerry & Jennifer, repeatedly screaming “Kerry, Kerry..” & “Jen, Jen..” & repeating certain phrases “Did I hit him”, “Could I have hit him”. Jennifer said that Kerry told Karen to “shut up”, “sit back” & “buckle up” & to “look for John”. While in the back of Kerry’s car en route to Fairview, Karen Read was “screaming” whether John could be at “certain people’s houses”including “Bella’s house” Bella being the daughter of Ashley, who John had previously dated & who Jennifer & Matthew McCabe had mentioned a few hours earlier, when giving John directions to 34 Fairview. Karen asked “Could he have been with Ashley”, the mother of Bella and then Kerry mentioned the name of another woman John had previously dated, a dance instructor. 6:00am (Approx) – John O’Keefe’s friend Michael Camerano woke up between around 5:30am & 6am after hearing phones ringing. He saw a lot of missed calls & text messages, including from his wife Katherine & Karen Read. He called his wife & learned that John hadn’t come home the night before & that John’s niece was home alone. Michael quickly got dressed & drove over to collect John’s niece to take her back to his home to “hang out” with his daughter. When Michael arrived at John’s he noticed the garage door was open. Michael & John’s niece tried to shut the garage door but had problems with the security keypad & they had to manually shut the garage door
6:01am (Approx) – Kerry Roberts stated Karen Read had said “Bella’s mom didn’t like me” Kerry also mentioned “the dance instructor”, a woman who John O’Keefe had dated around 10 years earlier (Listen to Kerry here)
6:03:03am – Just before Karen Read pretended to see John O’Keefe’s body as Kerry Roberts drove past the flagpole outside 34 Fairview, Karen called John’s phone so that her performance at her crime scene was recorded on his voicemail (#8) The call lasted 5 minutes & 12 seconds (Exhibit 629) Karen took her phone with her when she got out of Kerry’s car, then calculatingly put her phone on the ground, near to the left side of the back of Kerry’s car. John’s voicemail recorded around 4 plus minutes of Karen, Kerry & Jennifer McCabe’s arrival outside 34 Fairview (Listen to the voicemail here)
6:03am – When Kerry Roberts got near to Karen Read she noticed the shape of a body. Kerry said she “dug his head out” & realised it was John O’Keefe, who Kerry said was “completely covered” in about 3 to 4 inches of snow. Kerry observed John to be lying on his back with his arms by his side. She said his right eye was swollen shut & was “like a golf-ball” & blood had been coming out of his nose & mouth. Kerry also noticed John appeared to have “two layers” of clothing on, after watching Karen lift up John’s shirt. Jennifer McCabe gave Kerry blankets & heard Kerry yell at Karen to “get off” John. Kerry said she lifted John’s head up & put the blanket underneath his head, then began to carry out chest compressions (Listen to Kerry here)
6:03am – Jennifer McCabe said she couldn’t see anything outside & said “all of a sudden Karen starts screaming ‘There he is, there he is’ & she’s banging to get out” of Kerry Roberts car. Kerry said Karen said “There he is, there he is, let me the fuck out of this car“ & said she “started kicking the door”. Jennifer said Karen “just runs” over & “straddles John & she lifts up his shirt & then she lifted up her shirt & went to lay on him” (Listen to Jennifer describe events here). 6:03:47am – Jennifer McCabe said “I got out of the car & I came around & for a second or two I completely just froze, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, & then Kerry & I made eye contact & I called 911 & Kerry was asking me to go to the car & get, she was yelling to get towels or blankets or something, out of the back of her car” (Listen to Kerry here & Jennifer here) Jennifer can be heard asking Kerry Roberts about blankets during the 911 call. Jennifer said that there was enough snow, that John’s “body was covered in snow”
6:05am (Approx) – Police Sgt Saraf headed from church parking lot to 34 Fairview Road
6:07:42am – After the 911 call ended, Jennifer McCabe called her sister who lived at 34 Fairview. The call went unanswered as her sister was sound asleep. Apparently Kerry Roberts asked Jennifer McCabe if she could take over CPR, which Jennifer said she did (Listen to Jennifer here)

6:09:16am – Police officer Steve Saraf arrived at Karen Read’s crime scene, followed by officer Mullaney & officer Goode (Exhibit 14) Officer Saraf’s evidence was that Karen “…kept saying ‘This is all my fault, this is my fault, I did this. She was very hysterical. She kept asking ‘He’s dead. Is he dead? 6:10am (Approx) – Firefighter & paramedic Matthew Kelly drove ambulance 1 to 34 Fairview. He stated that Karen Read had said “He’s dead. He’s fucking dead” (Listen to Matthew Kelly here)
6:11am (Approx) – Firefighter & paramedic Anthony Flematti stated that when he arrived at his patients side, John O’Keefe’s jaw & limbs were able to be moved & the posterior of his body was red. Officer Flemetti wanted to get his patient out of the weather & into the ambulance to begin the warming process. John O’Keefe was placed onto a backboard, ready to be placed onto a gurney. Kerry Roberts noticed there was no snow underneath John, like there was in the area surrounding him. John’s phone was also on the grass & had been underneath him. Kerry picked it up & put in her pocket & at some point gave John’s phone to a member of the emergency services

3rd February 2022 – Troopers Dicicco, Proctor & Bukhenik attended Karen Read’s crime scene outside of 34 Fairview to carry out a secondary search in light of the fact items were still missing & the temperature had increased, meaning the snow had begun to melt. Already present at the scene was forensics officer Brent, who photographed the scene & findings. At 9:08am on 29th January 2022, Karen Read had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 93 milligrams per deciliter, or 0.093%. The legal BAC limit in Massachusetts for driving is 0.08%. Using 12:45am on 29th January 2022 as the last drink Karen consumed alcohol, Nicholas Roberts estimated that her BAC would have previously been a minimum of 0.135% or a maximum of 0.292%
