Innocence Fraud Phenomenon Verses Miscarriage Of Justice Phenomenon – Part 19l©️

Joan Albert’s Killer Simon Hall

Bristol University’s ‘Post Conviction Activist’ Michael Naughton: Facilitating and ’Empowering’ Psychopathic Killers (Part 13)

Following the exposure of Simon Hall’s factual guilt to his murder of Joan Albert in 2013, there were some people within the cult-like wrongful conviction movement who chose to publish stories about the validity of Simon’s factual guilt and confession. Michael Naughton was one of these people.

In April 2016 Julie Price wrote an open letter to the then chairman of the criminal cases reviews commission, Richard Foster.

Jon Robins

Julie Price is one of the cult-like wrongful conviction movement people who claimed in her 5th of September 2013 article, for Jon Robins The Justice Gap website (which was reproduced by Mark Godsey here), that she had many questions as to the circumstances surrounding Simon Hall’s confession. But Julie Price hasn’t asked a single question about Simon Hall’s confession in over 9 years.

Two days later Claire McGourlay (Who was mentioned in Part 17e here) who is another of the cult-like wrongful conviction movement people, also had an open letter to Richard Foster published by Jon Robins. Jon Robins is also mentioned in Part 19k here.

Several people commented at the foot of both articles including Michael Naughton who stated in part;

…..after 10 years of trying to work together with allegedly like-minded people with the same core aim – help to get innocent people to overturn their convictions and clear their names – it is clear to me that there are many different motives that are also at play and which can undermine what I think of as the core aim – careers, student recruitment, cv’s, vanity, to name but a few

Motivated By Fragile Ego’s

It is not known exactly what motivates Michael Naughton, although the reason he appears unable to admit he is wrong could be linked to him having a fragile ego.

In October 2019, in now deleted tweets, Michael Naughton (who goes by the name Empowering the Innocent (ETI) @EmpowerInnocent on Twitter) stated the following;

As already pointed out in Part 19a here and Part 19b here Michael Naughton lied about many aspects of the factual case details via the Private Eye article (a copy of which can be read in Part 19 here).

To date, Michael Naughton has never explained why he chose to lie like he did or why he chose to break his own Bristol university protocols to do so.

Around 8 months after Private Eye published lies in their insensitive article headed ‘A stab in the dark’ Michael Naughton published an article headed Can lawyers put people before law?. An excerpt reads;

If an innocence project finds that an alleged victim of a wrongful conviction is in fact factually guilty then justice can be said to have been done because a claim of innocence is settled and any doubts that the criminal justice system has got it wrong can be laid to rest.
At the same time, the cases of Simon Hall and Neil Hurley show how lawyers, who see themselves as being part of the solution to the wrongful conviction of innocent people, are, in reality, part of the problem. By complying with the rules of the system which prevent the exoneration of the innocent they are implicated, whether they like it or not, in the sacrifice of potentially innocent people. Simon Hall, imprisoned aged 24 for a murder he is unlikely to have committed, has maintained innocence for almost eight years whilst his life ticks away.

Alon Aviram Duped By Numpty Naughton?

Alon Aviram

In a 2016 article for the Guardian headed Bristol Cable founders: ‘We’re holding people to account for their actions’ Alon Aviram is quoted as saying;

It feels like a lot of people are getting away scot-free without being challenged. That’s one of the things that draws us in: trying to hold some people to account for their actions

Alon Aviram quoted by John Harris for the Guardian article headed Bristol Cable founders: ‘We’re holding people to account for their actions’ dated the 24th of January 2016

It was no surprise to learn Alon Aviram had not carried out his due diligence regarding the innocence fraud of killer Simon Hall and his enablers like Michael Naughton. And it was also no surprise to see Alon Aviram seemingly taken in by Michael Naughton.

On initial and subsequent meetings with Michael Naughton he can appear knowledgeable on the miscarriages of justice phenomenon. And some of Michael Naughton’s publications could suggest he cares for the victims of injustice. But appearances can be deceptive and one of the important lesson which could have been learned following the exposure of Simon Hall’s innocence fraud.

Alon Aviram referred to Michael Naughton as an ‘expert’ on the subject of miscarriages of justice;

Speaking to Michael, you can understand how he ended up an adversarial and campaigning academic. Now a doctor and Reader in Sociology and Law at the UoB, he has consulted with MPs, lectured conferences globally, and is an expert in miscarriages of justice

Statement by Alon Aviram on Michael Naughton from his article headed The working class academic fighting to overturn wrongful convictions 2nd March 2021

It is not known who approached who in order for Alon to write and publish his 2021 article headed The working class academic fighting to overturn wrongful convictions. And at the time Alon Aviram’s bio on The Bristol Cable stated “I cover crime, corruption and corporate wrongdoing. Get in touch if you’ve got a story” and his LinkedIn bio claimed “I have reported on organised crime, corruption and corporate malfeasance”.

Presumably Alon Aviram had yet to learn about the innocence fraud phenomenon, as opposed to the miscarriage of justice phenomenon and of the varying types of enablers and actors involved in this type of fraud.

Alon Aviram’s byline to his article stated of Michael Naughton;

He once called budding defence barrister and future labour leader, Keir Starmer, a “numpty” and hasn’t calmed down since

Alon Aviram from his article headed The working class academic fighting to overturn wrongful convictions 2nd March 2021
‘A numpty’

A numpty is referred to in the urban dictionary as “someone who confidently asserts themselves towards a false truth in the presence of others. Even when the rest of the people there know that they are completely wrong”.
